Chemeketa Community College will continue the Campus-Based Pre-Apprenticeship Program for winter term 2021 on the Salem campus after a successful summer program. The self-directed program helps participants gain the knowledge, skills, and experience valued by construction employers and Registered Apprenticeship Programs. After receiving approval from the Bureau of Labor and Industries Apprenticeship and Training Council, Chemeketa offered this program during summer 2021. Twelve of the fourteen admitted pre-apprentice participants interned with local employers with seven earning their certificate.

Students enrolled in the Pre-Apprenticeship program take two college classes to fulfill requirements: Trade Skills Fundamentals (APR 101) and an additional employment-related course or an internship. Participants must complete additional safety training, including OSHA 10 and First-Aid/CPR. Pre-Apprentices receive up to $650 in tools, safety clothing, boots, and gas cards as participants of the program which is made possible from a BOLI/ODOT grant. Chemeketa provides additional support to help pre-apprentices pay the tuition and fees for the required courses in the Pre-Apprenticeship Program, including financial aid, Job Corps Scholars, and the STEP Program. Traditionally underrepresented people, like women, veterans, and people of color are encouraged to apply.

Upon completion, pre-apprentices will receive a certificate that demonstrates their completion in a Registered Pre-Apprenticeship Program, college credit for courses, and OSHA 10 and First-Aid/CPR cards. These credentials are industry-recognized and assist participants in securing apprenticeships and jobs in construction and manufacturing companies.

"Chemeketa Community College's Pre-Apprenticeship Program provides hands-on learning opportunities and employability skills to help participants secure employment in construction and manufacturing careers," said Megan Cogswell, Director of Apprenticeship at Chemeketa Community College. “These skills, knowledge, and experience are valued by construction employers and Registered Apprenticeship Programs.”

Applications for the winter 2021-2022 program are due December 10, 2021, and space is limited. For more information on requirements or questions regarding the Pre-Apprenticeship Program, email.
